HDV (High definition video) ranges between differing formats – from 720p, for progressive scan, filmy looks to 1080i high definition at 50i or 60i. It is a highly popular production format for tighter budgets, as the cameras like the Sony Z1E give much better results than similar budget 3-chip dv or dvcam cameras such as the Sony PD170, at not only a smaller budget increase.
